Tuesday 9th July – walks **** Harris Eagle Observatory and Hushinish Cliffs – cloudy again :(

Woke up to thick fog again and it didn’t want to burn off very quickly today :( We read and Mag did some of her rug to pass the morning hoping for better things. The tide was up high and going out last night when we went to bed and very similar this morning. We had a pair of frantic oyster catcher parents trying to train their baby to fly over the inlet to them but in the end after a lot of mad squawking from the mother the baby launched itself off the side and swam over! We don’t think we have ever seen an oyster catcher swimming before. Late morning we left our lovely spot and drove up to North Harris to travel along the very scenic road towards Hushinish. It is a crazy road – again very narrow and more like a roller coaster than the one the other day! We stopped at the Eagle Observatory and walked the 2km (it felt a lot more!) through a beautiful glen with a fair sized river flowing through it towards some high craggy peaks. The countryside along here is like mini highlands of Scotland. We didn’t hold out a lot of hope of seeing the eagles as the cloud still really low – although it did break out with a patch of blue sky as we came down the road, showing the glen off very nicely! No eagles I’m afraid but met some really nice people and saw some red deer right on top of the ridge. Had a good laugh at a message somebody had put in the visitors book about seeing an eagle attacking a red deer and the deer being saved by the sudden appearance of a panda! LOL. Back in the van and onto the crazy road which led you through some gates which looked like a private entrance. Suddenly we are passing a proper castle flying the Scottish flag with a rolls Royce parked outside!(Amhuinnsuide Castle) Other than no parking signs there was no clue that it was the road and we really thought we had taken a wrong turn but no, we exited through some grand gates and the mad road carried on! We arrived finally at Hushinish beach and were really pleased to find that we were able to park up for the night right by the beach and it was only 5 o’clock :) As we had had such a late breakfast we had our lunch/tea and set out on a walk around the headland which was really lovely – the terrain was either very rocky or very soggy peat. Back along the beach to the van where we had a snack and played two rounds of lost cities :) Can’t believe the view we have tonight – right on the white sandy beach but the sun didn’t put in an appearance at all today :(
